What a cervix cauterization instrument set is
A cervix cauterization instrument set is the group of steel instruments that gets the cervix ready for a cautery treatment and keeps it in view while the energy is applied. Google’s own summary splits a complete kit into two groups: the instruments that expose and stabilize the cervix, and the electrosurgical hardware that delivers the heat. This set is the first group, all of it, and none of the second.
That needs saying clearly. There is no electrode in this box, no cautery pencil, no generator and no insulated coating on any instrument. A clinic that buys it expecting a ready to plug in LEEP kit will be disappointed, and we would rather lose that sale than have the box opened on the morning of a list.
So what is a cervical cautery, and why sell the steel on its own? A cervical cautery procedure burns or freezes a thin layer of cervical tissue, usually to treat chronic cervicitis, an erosion, or abnormal cells found at colposcopy. The energy comes from a unit the clinic already has. What wears out, gets lost and needs replacing every few years is the steel around it, which is this tray.
Our tray is weighted toward swabs. Four sponge forceps in an 11 piece set looks generous until you watch a cervical cautery treatment: the cervix is cleaned before, dabbed during and pressed after, and a forceps that has touched a bleeding point is set aside rather than reused.
Key design features
The Auvard vaginal speculum
Weighted, 80 mm by 38 mm, it sits on the posterior wall and stays there without a hand on it. During cauterization that matters more than usual, because nobody wants an assistant’s fingers near a working electrode. The Auvard vaginal speculum is all steel, which is right for exposure but is also why the electrode must never be allowed to touch it.
Four long sponge forceps
Foerster-Ballenger pattern, 25 cm, curved. The length keeps the clinician’s hand well back from the field, and the curve lets the swab reach the cervix while the shaft stays clear of the speculum.
Overholt-Geissendoerfer artery forceps
Two at 21 cm, Fig.4, angled. They grip a bleeding point the cautery has not sealed, or hold a tag of tissue for a sample. The angle carries the jaw round the edge of the cervix where a straight forceps would fight the speculum.
Needle holder and scalpel handle
A 24 cm Mayo-Hegar needle holder for a stitch if a vessel needs tying, and a No.7K scalpel handle, the long slim handle that takes small blades into a deep field. Two straight dressing forceps, 20 cm, complete the set.
What is in the tray, piece by piece
Read off our own pattern record for item AD-95541. The last row is the one people miss, so it is stated plainly.

Where the set is used
Every use below pairs this steel with a cautery or cryo unit the clinic already owns.
| Situation | What the set does | Pieces doing the work |
|---|---|---|
| Chronic cervicitis | Exposes and cleans the cervix for treatment | Auvard speculum, sponge forceps |
| Cervical erosion or ectropion | Keeps the field dry while the surface is treated | Sponge forceps, dressing forceps |
| Abnormal cells after colposcopy | Holds the field for the cervical cautery treatment | Speculum, Overholt forceps |
| Bleeding after a biopsy | Grips and ties a bleeding point the cautery missed | Overholt forceps, needle holder |
| Clinic tray replacement | Replaces the worn steel around an existing unit | The whole set |
What it does, and what it must not be asked to do
Steel and electricity share this field, which is why half of this table is about keeping them apart.
| Instrument | What it does | What it must not do |
|---|---|---|
| Auvard speculum | Holds the posterior wall back by its own weight | Touch a working electrode. It is bare steel, not insulated |
| Sponge forceps | Clean, dab and press the cervix | Be used near the electrode while wet with an alcohol based prep |
| Overholt forceps | Grip a bleeding point or a tag of tissue | Be used as a conductor to cauterize through. They are not coated |
| Needle holder | Places a stitch if a vessel needs tying | Grip the cervix itself. A tenaculum does that, and it is not in this set |
| The set as a whole | Exposure, swabbing and hemostasis | Deliver any energy. There is no electrode, handle or generator in the box |
How it compares with the other gynecology sets
Where this tray sits among our other gynecology sets, and when one of them is the better buy.
| Set | Pieces | What it carries | Buy it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cervix cauterization, this page | 11 | Auvard speculum, four sponge forceps, Overholt forceps, needle holder | You own the cautery unit and need the steel around it |
| Cervical biopsy | 6 | Van Doren biopsy forceps, Kristeller specula | You are sampling the cervix, not treating it |
| Dilatation and curettage | 23 | Hegar dilators, six curettes, uterine sound | The uterus itself needs sampling |
| Uterine evacuation | 16 | Hegar set of eight, blunt curettes, three tenacula | The cavity needs clearing |
Materials and finish
Every piece in this cervix cauterization instrument set is made from high quality medical grade stainless steel. The steel itself is made to a German specification. We do not publish a grade number. What a clinic needs to know about a sponge forceps is whether its ratchet still holds a swab after hundreds of cycles, and a grade number does not say that.
None of these instruments is coated, and that is deliberate. An insulating coating that has been nicked is worse than none at all, because it looks safe while current leaks through the damage. Bare polished steel is honest about what it is. The speculum is mirror polished inside to throw light onto the cervix and satin outside so it does not glare.
Caring for it
Rinse the sponge forceps and the Overholt jaws straight after the list. Blood dried into serrations is what turns a smooth ratchet stiff. Open all ratchets for the autoclave.
Look over the speculum blade for any scorch mark after each case. A brown mark means an electrode touched it. The steel will clean up, but the mark is worth a word with whoever was holding the pencil.
Every few months, close each sponge forceps on a dry swab and pull. If the swab slides out on the first ratchet tooth, the jaws have sprung and the forceps will drop a swab in the vagina at the worst moment. We regrind and reset sprung forceps; send them back with the item code and we will tell you whether a reset or a replacement is the better answer.
Ordering and wholesale
Every piece of the cervix cauterization instrument set is made by Adas Instruments in our own workshop and sold direct, which is why the price sits where it does against the catalog houses. Order one for a single tray, or in quantity for a hospital list or a distributor line. We do OEM work under your own brand and your own item numbers. Send us a sample and we will hold a run to your pattern rather than ours. Stock items ship from our own workshop. Backorder items take 10 to 12 working days to make. Every instrument carries a three year replacement warranty against manufacturing defects. Production is controlled under an ISO 13485 quality management system.
Frequently asked questions
What is the instrument used for cauterization?
The energy comes from an electrosurgical or cryo unit with its own electrode or probe. The steel instruments in this set expose and steady the cervix around it. This set does not include the unit or the electrodes.
What is a cervical cautery?
A treatment that burns or freezes a thin layer of the cervix, usually for chronic cervicitis, an erosion or abnormal cells. It is done in a clinic with a speculum in place, which is the part this tray provides.
Does this set include electrodes or a cautery handle?
No. Our cervix cauterization instrument set is the steel support set only. Use the electrodes, handle and generator you already own.
Why is the Auvard speculum used for cervical cautery?
Because it is weighted and holds itself in place, so no assistant’s hand needs to be near the electrode. Ours is 80 mm by 38 mm. Keep the electrode clear of it, since it is bare steel.
What are the different instruments used for cervical biopsy?
A punch biopsy forceps, a speculum and dressing forceps. That is a separate tray from this one, our cervical biopsy instrument set, built around a 25 cm Van Doren forceps.
Related products and categories
The sample that leads to a cautery is usually taken on our separate cervical biopsy tray. For general minor gynecology work in the same clinic, the hymenectomy instrument set carries Allis, Mosquito and Rochester-Pean forceps with a needle holder. For work inside the uterus, the dilatation and curettage instrument set and the uterine evacuation instrument set are the two larger trays.
All of our trays for this specialty sit under gynecology and obstetrics instrument sets, and the full range of procedure trays is under surgical instrument sets.
