Selecting Mouth Gag And Tongue Blade Sizes
The gag frame is a single purchase, but tongue blades are the part that has to fit the patient. A department running mixed adult and paediatric lists needs a graded blade range rather than two sizes, since a blade that is too long presses on the epiglottis and one that is too short loses the lower tonsil pole. Order the frame with a full blade set, then add spares in the two paediatric sizes you use most.
Cold Steel Or Diathermy Assisted Sets
Cold steel dissection needs a scissors and dissector group, a snare with spare wire and several long artery forceps for the bed. Diathermy assisted technique reduces the instrument count but relies on insulated handles and a suction diathermy tube. Many units keep one full cold steel set available even when they normally operate with diathermy, since equipment failure or a bleeding tonsil returning to theatre calls for the traditional instruments.

Tonsillectomy is a short operation with a long reprocessing cycle, so the number of sets rather than instrument quality usually limits a list. What is included in a standard tonsillectomy set?
A typical set contains a Boyle Davis mouth gag with graded tongue blades, a pair of Draffin bipods, tonsil holding forceps, a tonsil dissector and scissors, a snare with wire, long artery forceps for the bed, a needle holder, a Yankauer or Wilde suction tube and an adenoid curette. Paediatric lists usually add smaller blades and a caged curette. Contents can be adjusted before manufacture.
Do you supply paediatric sizes?
Yes. Tongue blades are produced in a graded range down to small paediatric widths, adenoid curettes are supplied in narrow blade sizes, and shorter artery forceps and dissectors are available for children. We recommend keeping paediatric instruments on separate, clearly identified trays so they are not mixed into adult sets during reprocessing, which is the usual reason the wrong blade appears at induction.
Can we buy replacement tongue blades and snare wire separately?
Both are supplied as separate items. Tongue blades are ordered individually by size and pattern, and snare wire is available in coils cut to length. These are the highest wear parts of a tonsillectomy set, so holding spares is far more economical than replacing complete sets. Tell us your gag model and blade type and we will confirm the matching replacements.
Do you handle hospital tenders for multiple sets?
We supply hospital and government tenders directly from the factory, which suits departments buying eight or ten identical sets at once. Quotations are itemised, certification paperwork is provided, and sample sets can be sent where the tender process requires them. Sets can be marked with your hospital identification. Production schedules are confirmed in writing and consignments ship by DHL or FedEx.
