What a luer lock handle is

A luer lock cannula is only a tube with a fitting on the end. To work with it the surgeon needs something to hold, and something that carries the fluid or the suction to it. A luer lock handle does both jobs. The cannula screws onto the front, the line from the pump or the syringe goes on the back, and the hand sits on the body in between.

The point of the luer lock is the change. Google AI Mode, read on 23 October 2026, puts it plainly: because the fitting is a standard one, a surgeon can swap cannula sizes, lengths and port patterns in the middle of a case without changing the whole suction or fluid line. One handle stays on the tubing, and the cannulas come and go at the front.

On our listing this piece is also called the super handle for luer lock. It is the same handle under two names, and the order form treats it as one product with four colors. Some buyers look for it simply as a liposuction cannula handle.

Key design features

A luer lock at each end

Both ends carry a luer lock fitting. The front takes the cannula and the back takes the line, so the handle sits in the middle of the system rather than at the end of it. In our photograph of this handle the two fittings are bright metal against the colored body, one at the nose and one at the tail, with the ribbed grip running between them. That is the layout the AI Mode answer gives for infiltration handles: a luer at the front for the cannula and a luer or a barb at the back for the tubing. Ours uses a luer at the back, so a syringe fits there as well as tubing.

Luer lock and super luer lock cannulas

Our earlier copy for this handle says it takes both luer lock and super luer lock cannulas on the front. That matters on a tray where the two hub styles are mixed, because one handle serves both. If a cannula has a threaded hub instead, it needs a different handle, which the table further down names.

A ribbed grip

The body is ringed along its length with raised ribs. They give the fingers something to hold through a wet glove, and they stop the handle turning in the hand while a cannula is screwed on or off the front. Behind the ribs the body steps down toward the tail, where the back fitting sits.

Four colors, one price

The order form offers the handle in blue, which is the default, and in gold, red or purple. The color does not change the price; every one is 28 dollars. A second color on the tray makes it easy to tell two handles apart when one is set up for infiltration and the other for a syringe.

Materials and finish

Every luer lock handle we make has an anodized aluminum body. Aluminum keeps it light, and the anodizing gives it the color and a hard surface layer. We do not publish an alloy grade.

The two end fittings are bright metal, set into the colored body. The color is part of the anodized surface rather than a coat of paint on top of it. Strong alkaline detergents can dull anodized aluminum over time, so a neutral instrument detergent is the safer choice for this handle.

Caring for it

Take the cannula off the front and the line off the back as soon as the case ends. Flush water through the handle from one end to the other, then push a brush through the bore. Clean both fittings from the outside, because fluid sits in the threads of a luer lock. Dry it, steam sterilize it on the normal instrument cycle, and store it with nothing screwed on. A cross threaded fitting may not seal again, so start every cannula straight.
