What a Mercedes liposuction cannula is

A Mercedes liposuction cannula is a hollow steel tube with a closed, rounded end and three ports cut in a ring just behind it. The surgeon passes it through a small incision into the fat layer, a syringe or a suction line pulls on the back end, and fat enters through the ports as the cannula moves. The trade calls that ring of three the Mercedes pattern and the cannula a Mercedes tip cannula, and it is the starting point the rest of the family is measured against.

What makes the pattern useful is where the ports face. One port draws from one side of the shaft only. Three spaced around the tip draw from every side at once, so the surgeon does not have to hold the cannula turned a particular way to keep it working. That is why it gets used for general debulking, and for harvesting fat that is going back in somewhere else as a graft.

The three ports sit in a single ring a short way behind the tip, spaced evenly around the shaft. Each is an elongated slot rather than a round hole, which is how the pattern shows in our own photograph of this cannula. A slot gives tissue a longer opening to enter than a round hole of the same width, and three of them around the shaft are what let a Mercedes cannula keep working whichever way it is rotated in the hand.

A closed, rounded tip

The end of the tube is closed and rounded. A blunt end is the norm on an aspiration cannula, because the instrument is meant to move through fat rather than cut a path of its own. A cannula built for fibrous tissue has a different tip, and we list those separately.

Seven ways to finish the back end

The order form offers seven ways to finish the back end: a super fix handle in style A or style B, an aluminum Luer lock, a steel Luer lock, a super Luer lock, a Toomey hub, or a threaded fitting. The Luer lock hubs screw onto a syringe or onto a separate Luer handle, and the Toomey hub takes a 60 cc Toomey syringe for harvesting by hand. The two super fix handles turn the cannula into one piece for a suction line, and the threaded fitting screws into a handle made to take it. The hub also sets the price: 22 dollars with either Luer lock, 32 with the super Luer lock or the threaded fitting, 37 with the Toomey hub, and 45 or 55 with a super fix handle.

A straight shaft in five diameters

The shaft is straight, and it comes in 2, 2.4, 3, 4 and 5 mm. Lengths run from 15 to 35 cm. A short shaft is easier to control in a small area, and a long one reaches across an abdomen or a thigh from one incision.

Caring for it

Flush the cannula with water as soon as it comes out of use, before anything dries in the lumen. Push a cannula brush through the full length, and clean each port from the outside as well. Fat and blood dried inside a narrow tube are hard to see and harder to shift. Dry it, then steam sterilize it on the normal instrument cycle. Store it flat or hanging straight, because a bent shaft no longer runs true in the tissue.
