What Solz scissors are
Solz scissors are a dissecting pattern, not a cutting one. The work they are made for is the separation of one tissue layer from another under a flap, where the surgeon wants the blades to find the plane and open it rather than cut across it. The curve of the blades and the shape of the tips both serve that job.
Google AI Mode, read on 26 October 2026, describes them as dissecting scissors used in plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, and names facelifts, abdominoplasty and mammaplasty as the procedures they are chosen for. The catalog description of the pattern lists the same three, and it says the shape of the cutting tips is what allows the tissue layers to be separated cleanly.
In catalogs the pattern is often listed as Solz gold tip scissors, because of the gold colored tungsten carbide at the tips. The Super Cut version is sold as Solz supercut scissors. Both are the same pattern and the same curve; the difference is in the cutting edges. Among the supercut dissecting scissors, Solz is the curved, broad tipped one made for working inside a plane.
Key design features
Curved blades
The blades curve to one side along their length. Seen from the side in the catalog drawing, the curve runs from the screw joint to the tips. The end of the pair can then follow a rounded surface, such as the underside of a breast flap or the contour of the face, while the rings stay clear of it. A straight pair held at the same angle would dig its tips in.
Broad, rounded tips
In our photograph the tips are wide and flat, with rounded ends, and they are where the gold inserts sit. A broad tip spreads tissue when the pair is opened inside a plane, and the rounded end rides along a layer instead of piercing it. That is the shape the catalog credits with separating the layers, and it is why this pattern is pushed and spread as much as it is closed.
Gold tip: tungsten carbide inserts
The gold color at the tips marks tungsten carbide, a material far harder than the stainless steel of the blades. Inserts of it at the cutting end hold their edge for longer between sharpenings, which matters on a pattern that is used through a long dissection. Our photograph also shows a gold finger ring, which is how tungsten carbide scissors are commonly marked on a tray.
TC tip or TC Super Cut
The order form offers two versions. TC tip is the plain gold tip pair. TC Super Cut adds the Super Cut edge, which the AI Mode answer describes as one knife like razor edge and one micro serrated edge: the serrated blade holds the tissue still while the razor edge cuts it. In the trade a black ring marks a Super Cut pair, and our photograph shows one gold ring and one black.
Which one to order
Four choices, read off our own order form and price list on 26 October 2026. Length and edge are chosen separately.
| Version | Length | Cutting edges | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| TC tip | 15 cm (6 in) | Tungsten carbide gold tips | 26.50 dollars |
| TC tip | 20 cm (8 in) | Tungsten carbide gold tips | 34.60 dollars |
| TC Super Cut | 15 cm (6 in) | Gold tips, one razor edge and one serrated edge | 32.50 dollars |
| TC Super Cut | 20 cm (8 in) | Gold tips, one razor edge and one serrated edge | 38.50 dollars |
Where it is used
The first two columns come from the Google AI Mode answer read on 26 October 2026 and from the catalog description of the pattern. The last column is ours.
| Procedure | What the sources say | Which length to reach for |
|---|---|---|
| Facelift | Named by the AI answer and the catalog page | 15 cm for the face; 20 cm where the neck flap runs long |
| Mammaplasty | Named by both, for separating the tissue layers of the breast | 20 cm |
| Abdominoplasty | Named by both | 20 cm, for the length of the abdominal flap |
| Subcutaneous and fascia dissection | The AI answer gives it as the use of the curved gold tip pattern | Either; the 15 cm in a small field |
What it is for, and what it is not for
A dissecting pattern earns its keep in the plane. The table sends the other jobs to an instrument of ours that does them.
| Job | Use Solz scissors? | What to use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Separating tissue layers under a flap | Yes | This is the job it is made for |
| Cutting sutures | No | A suture scissors, so the gold tips are not blunted on thread |
| Fine work on the eyelid | No | Our blepharoplasty scissors |
| Opening a breast pocket bluntly | No | Our Solz atraumatic breast dissector |
| Long, slim facelift undermining | Sometimes | Our Trepsat or Gorney facelift scissors |
How it compares with related instruments
Three instruments of ours do neighboring jobs. The second and third columns are read off each product’s own listing.
| Instrument | Working end, from its listing | Lengths on its listing | Where it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solz scissors (this page) | curved blades with tungsten carbide gold tips | 15 and 20 cm | separating tissue layers in facelift, mammaplasty and abdominoplasty |
| Trepsat scissors | each blade ends in a flat, blunt spatula | 16 to 20 cm | lifting facial and neck skin off the layer beneath |
| Gorney scissors | long slim blades, titanium coated | 14.5 to 23 cm | facelift, neck lift and brow flaps |
| Solz breast dissector | a blunt dissector, not a scissors | 34 and 37 cm | opening a breast pocket |
Materials and finish
Every pair of Solz scissors we make is formed from high quality medical grade stainless steel. The steel itself is made to a German specification. We do not publish a grade number.
The tungsten carbide sits in the tips as inserts, and the gold color marks where it is. The rest of each blade, the shanks and the rings are stainless steel, and the gold and black on the rings are finishes over it. On the pair in our photograph one ring is gold and one is black, which is the way the trade marks carbide and Super Cut on a crowded tray.
Caring for it
Rinse the scissors as soon as the case ends, before blood dries in the joint, then clean them open so the brush reaches the inner faces of the blades and the screw. Never use them on sutures, wire or dressings; that blunts the carbide faster than tissue ever will. Dry them, lubricate the joint lightly, steam sterilize them on the normal instrument cycle, and store them closed with the tips protected. Tungsten carbide is hard but brittle, so a dropped pair should be checked at the tips before it goes back on a tray.
Ordering and wholesale
Each pair of Solz scissors is made by Adas Instruments in our own workshop and sold direct, which is why the price sits where it does against the catalog houses. Order one for a single tray, or in quantity for a hospital list or a distributor line. We do OEM work under your own brand and your own item numbers. Send us a sample and we will hold a run to your pattern rather than ours. Stock items ship from our own workshop. Backorder items take 10 to 12 working days to make. Every instrument carries a three year replacement warranty against manufacturing defects. Production is controlled under an ISO 13485 quality management system.
Frequently asked questions
What are Solz scissors used for?
They are used to separate tissue layers under a flap in plastic and cosmetic surgery, mainly in facelift, mammaplasty and abdominoplasty. The curved blades follow the contour and the broad gold tips spread and open the plane, which is why the pattern is pushed and spread as much as it is closed.
What are SuperCut scissors?
They are scissors with two different blades: one ground to a knife like razor edge and one with a fine serrated edge. The serrated blade holds the tissue still while the razor edge cuts it. In the trade a black finger ring is the usual mark of a Super Cut pair.
What is the difference between the TC tip and the TC Super Cut Solz scissors?
Both have the same curve and the same tungsten carbide gold tips. The TC Super Cut adds the Super Cut edges, a razor edge on one blade and a serrated edge on the other. It costs a little more: 32.50 or 38.50 dollars against 26.50 or 34.60 dollars for the TC tip.
Which length of Solz scissors should I order?
That follows the field. The 15 cm (6 in) pair suits the face and smaller fields, and the 20 cm (8 in) pair reaches further under a long breast or abdominal flap. Both lengths come in TC tip and TC Super Cut, so the choice of edge does not limit the length.
How do I look after tungsten carbide scissors?
Clean them open straight after use, keep them for tissue only, lubricate the joint, and steam sterilize them with your other instruments. Carbide is hard but brittle, so check the tips after any drop. When the edge starts to drag on tissue, the pair is due for sharpening by someone who works on carbide.
