What the micro adson forceps is
A micro adson forceps is an Adson thumb forceps built on a finer and shorter working end. The handle is the same wide flat Adson grip, the action is the same, and there is no lock and no ratchet anywhere on it. Only the tip changes. It is made by Adas Instruments in high quality medical grade stainless steel, and it is reusable and fully autoclavable.
Catalogues list the same instrument as a micro adson tissue forceps when it carries teeth, an adson micro forceps, a micro adson dressing forceps when the jaw is serrated, and micro adson pickups or simply a small adson forceps, pickups being the American theatre word for a thumb forceps.
It exists for one reason: on a small field the bulk of a standard tip is between your eye and the tissue you are trying to hold.
What the finer tip buys you
Two things, and they are worth separating.
The first is sight. On an eyelid or a nasal tip the working area is a few millimetres across, and a standard Adson tip covers a good part of it. A finer tip leaves the field visible while the tissue is held, which is the difference between placing a suture where you meant to and placing it where you could see.
The second is pressure. A smaller tooth needs less closing force to hold the same fine tissue, and less force is what keeps an eyelid edge from marking. The instrument is not simply a smaller version of the pattern; it changes how gently you can work.
- Two jaw builds. 1×2 interlocking teeth, or fine cross serrations with no teeth.
- Two materials. Standard steel, or a carbide insert for daily lists.
- No locking mechanism. A pure thumb forceps.
- Satin finish. A polished tip throws the lamp back at you in a small field.
Builds of the micro adson forceps we ship
Four builds, from two choices: the jaw, and the gripping face.
| JAW BUILD | GRIPPING FACE | WHAT IT IS FOR | ITEM CODE |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1×2 teeth | Standard stainless steel | Fine skin edges, occasional use | AC-41.29 |
| 1×2 teeth | Tungsten carbide insert | Fine skin edges, daily lists | AC-41.29 |
| Serrated non toothed | Standard stainless steel | Mucosa and fine material, occasional use | AC-41.29 |
| Serrated non toothed | Tungsten carbide insert | Mucosa and fine material, daily lists | AC-41.29 |
Nothing is listed there that we do not hold. Most buyers take the 1×2 toothed build in standard steel. If you want a length or a tip that is not shown, ask before you order and we will tell you what is possible.
Uses by specialty
Specialty on the left, because that is how a purchasing office searches. Procedure on the right, because that is how a surgeon searches. Same instrument in every row.
| SPECIALTY | PROCEDURE |
|---|---|
| Oculoplastic surgery | Eyelid skin, lash line and periorbital closure |
| Rhinoplasty and ENT | Nasal tip, columella and mucosal handling |
| Plastic and reconstructive surgery | Small facial flaps and fine closure |
| Microsurgery | Fine suture handling and small vessel field work |
| Dermatology | Punch biopsy and small excision on the face |
| Hand surgery | Digital skin and nail bed |
| Veterinary and laboratory work | Small animal and specimen handling |
Oculoplastic and rhinoplasty work is where most of these pairs go. Both are fields where the scar is looked at closely afterwards, by the patient, every day.
Tissue it handles, and which jaw to order
The instrument carries no needle and no suture, so the only question is what it is holding. On a tip this fine the wrong choice shows immediately.
| TISSUE OR MATERIAL | JAW BUILD | WHY |
|---|---|---|
| Eyelid skin | 1×2 teeth at low pressure | Enough bite to evert the edge, nothing more |
| Nasal tip skin | 1×2 teeth | Thick sebaceous skin needs a point to hold it |
| Nasal mucosa | Serrated | A tooth perforates it |
| Small flap edge | 1×2 teeth | A point hold on a small edge, held briefly |
| Graft edge | Serrated | Held without perforating |
| Fine suture | Serrated | A tooth frays the strand |
| Small dressings | Serrated | Friction grip, nothing pierced |
Buying one pair? Take the 1×2 teeth. Buying two? Make the second serrated, because mucosa and fine suture are what a micro adson forceps meets most often once it is on an ENT tray.
How it compares with other fine patterns
These are the instruments that sit beside it on a fine tray.
| PATTERN | TIP | WHEN YOU REACH FOR IT |
|---|---|---|
| This pattern | Fine and short | Small fields, where you must see past the tip |
| Standard Adson | Fine, full length | Skin closure anywhere the view is not blocked |
| Micro Adson extra delicate | Tip thickness chosen, 0.3 to 0.9 mm | When the tip thickness itself is the decision |
| Adson Brown | Rows of fine teeth | Flaps and thin skin needing spread pressure |
| Iris forceps | Short, very fine, ophthalmic pattern | Ophthalmic work on the globe |
| Bishop Harmon | Three fine teeth, ophthalmic handle | Conjunctiva and eyelid margin |
The comparison people get wrong is between the micro adson forceps and the extra delicate build. The extra delicate is not a finer version of this instrument in general; it is the same idea with the tip thickness made an explicit choice, 0.3, 0.5 or 0.9 mm. Choose this pattern when you want a fine Adson, and that one when the exact tip thickness is the decision.
Materials and finish
The instrument is made in high quality medical grade stainless steel, with a tungsten carbide insert brazed into the jaw on the carbide build. The steel itself is made to a German specification. Every pair is passivated and boil tested before packing, and the finish is satin rather than mirror.
On a jaw this small the grade is not a detail. There is very little metal in a micro tooth, so a soft grade rounds it in months rather than years, and a hard grade chips it. The grade sits between the two, and the carbide build exists for the buyers whose lists are heavy enough that even the right grade will not last long enough.
Care and sterilization
Rinse in cool water straight after use so blood does not dry between the teeth. Clean with a neutral pH enzymatic detergent and an ultrasonic bath, rinse in deionized water, dry fully, then steam autoclave at 134 degrees Celsius. Do not put an abrasive pad near the tip, and on the carbide build keep abrasives away entirely.
Check the closure under magnification rather than by eye. On a tip this fine a misalignment too small to see across a bench is enough to drop a suture, and a loupe or a bench magnifier is the only honest way to inspect it. On the toothed build the tooth must drop cleanly between its two opposing teeth.
Ordering and wholesale
This pattern is supplied by Adas Instruments to hospitals, surgical distributors and OEM buyers, in single units and in bulk. The item code is AC-41.29 and it is printed in the build table above so a procurement search finds it. Backorder items dispatch in 10 to 12 working days. Every instrument carries a three year replacement against manufacturing defects.
For wholesale and OEM orders, instruments ship unpackaged in bulk or individually poly bagged, and laser marking with a distributor code or a hospital asset number is available on the shaft. Tell us the jaw build, the gripping face and the quantity and the quotation comes back with the lead time for that run.
Production is controlled under an ISO 13485 quality management system.
Frequently asked questions
What are Micro Adson forceps used for?
Work where a standard Adson tip is too big to see past. Eyelid and periorbital skin, nasal tip and columella, small flaps on the face, fine graft edges and microsurgical closure. It is the same handle and the same non locking action, on a finer and shorter working end.
How is it different from a standard Adson forceps?
Only the working end. The handle, the thumb grip and the absence of any lock are identical. The tip is finer and shorter, so it fits into a small field and lets you see what you are holding. A standard Adson is the better instrument anywhere the extra bulk does not block the view.
Is there a non toothed Micro Adson forceps?
Yes. The serrated build has fine cross serrations and no teeth, and it is often called a micro adson dressing forceps. It handles mucosa, graft edges, fine suture and small dressings by friction alone, so nothing is pierced.
What does the tungsten carbide option add?
Wear life on a tip that has very little metal to spare. On a jaw this small the teeth are tiny, so rounding happens sooner than on a standard Adson. The carbide build keeps the bite on a daily list. The standard steel build is right for a set that is opened occasionally.
Are micro Adson forceps the same as micro pickups?
In an American operating room, yes. Pickups is the theatre word for a thumb forceps, so micro adson pickups and this instrument are the same thing, and either name finds this page.
Related products and categories
Surgeons choosing a fine Adson usually compare this against the standard adson forceps, the micro adson forceps extra delicate where the tip thickness is chosen, the adson brown forceps for flaps, and the adson forceps tungsten carbide for daily lists. The family sits in dressing and tissue forceps, and this pattern is also listed under rhinoplasty instruments.
